Luna Lopez (b. 1996)(SE)– Revealing and Concealing
«We dislike culture» was Freud's answer to the question why man was not happy despite all his progress. But it is precisely this displeasure, this discomfort that teaches us who we are, where our limits are and not least - what we really desire and dream about. The discomfort can also be pleasant, pleasurable and aesthetically pleasing, if not to oneself, then at least to others.
Luna Lopez also works with the pleasant discomfort, with staged photography of situations where people seem to be in a psychological middle ground, both exposed to the gaze of the camera and the photographer and deeply immersed in an inner, calm self-view. Violence, sex and desire can only be sensed, because all the individuals in the pictures appear as the tip of an iceberg, which is far, far bigger and heavier than what the picture surface tells.
